As an Animal Caretaker within the Aquatic Ecosystems Health Branch of the Upper Midwest Environmental Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:
- Routinely cares for eggs, fry, and fish throughout the rearing cycle including feeding, sorting, collecting, measuring, transferring.- Routinely cleans tanks, ponds, and raceways with attention to detail and using best practices techniques.- Monitors the appearance and behavior of fish for changes in appearance or behavior that may be indicative of disease, or environmental factors which might be of concern, and reports observations to the supervisor.- Records, computes and summarizes data related to fish care, feeding, and maintenance.- Operates basic water quality meters such as digital thermometers, dissolved oxygen meters, and multiparameter colorimeters.- Transports fish using standard hatchery techniques as directed by supervisor.- Performs unskilled maintenance and housekeeping duties associated with the indoor and outdoor aquatic culture facilities to ensure upkeep of a neat and orderly working environment. - Work requires the incumbent to routinely works a nontypical tour of duty to include independent work on every-other weekend and Federal holiday to care for and maintain aquatic animals. Physical Effort:
Work requires heavy physical exertion to manually carry, and/or move and/or lift objects or materials weighing up to 50 pounds (unassisted); prolonged standing, walking, bending, climbing; crawling, kneeling, stooping, turning and reaching, potentially in tight areas; moving arms, hands, feet, and legs and working in tiring or uncomfortable positions. May work from ladders and scaffolds requiringbalance and climbing ability. Incumbent is under a great deal of strain by continually bending, reaching, turning, and moving of hands, arms, feet, and legs, and by the vibration and jerking of the equipment. Work is performed in crowded and noisy environments; around dust, fumes, and odors. Working Conditions:
The work is performed indoors and/or outdoors. Indoor work may expose the employee to work areas which can be bad-smelling, dirty, greasy, noisy or smoky. Outdoor work may expose the employee to numerous weather conditions including extreme cold, heat, rain, and/or snow. Potential serious injury may result from mishandling equipment/tools and/or from performance of strenuous work assignments. Protective clothing, eyewear, gloves, and safety shoes may be required for safe performance of duties when working with caustic cleaning agents and pesticides, machinery, and/or power equipment. There is no specific length of training or experience required; however, applicants must be able to demonstrate the ability to perform the basic work of the position without more than normal supervision through experience shown in the written resume and responses to the job related task statements in this announcement.
