Research Toxicologist, GS-0415-12/13/14 (PERM-MP-JJ)

As a RESEARCH TOXICOLOGIST within the UPPER MIDWEST ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES CENTER, some of your specific duties will include:
The Scientist leads a toxicology program, i.e. supervises staff, manages budgets, coordinates research with stakeholders, and ensures product delivery. The Scientist works as a principal investigator planning, designing, and executing comprehensive experimental and descriptive research for discovery and evaluation of biological and chemical tools to control populations of invertebrate and vertebrate aquatic invasive species and assess the impacts of those tools on native species with emphasis on the Laurentian Great Lakes and Upper Mississippi River Basins. The Scientist understands the toxicity of compounds to aquatic organisms, identify species specific toxicants, develop structure activity relationships to identify bioactive compounds, develop analytical techniques to determine mode of action of the bioactive compounds, understand the environmental fate of chemical toxicants, and develop pharmacokinetic models for chemical toxicants. The Scientist regularly submits scientific proposals to garner funds to conduct research and pursues collaboration with other government scientists and academic institutions. PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
When conducting infrequent field work, the Scientist encounters some physical exertion such as walking over wet, rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. The Scientist implements moderate physical ability and average agility and dexterity.WORK ENVIRONMENT:
A major portion of the scientist's work occurs in a laboratory and office setting. Temperature and weather extremes may be encountered. Laboratory and field work may require the use of special protective gear. The Scientist conducts work in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow workers, or property with which entrusted. Basic Education Requirement:

In addition to the basic education requirements, if you are qualifying based on specialized experience you must have 1-year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service Specialized experience must include; moderate experience as a lead researcher determining the toxicity of molecules, identifying the structural components of a molecule that cause it to be toxic and selective, applying knowledge to answer complex toxicological and risk assessment questions using multidisciplinary data (e.g., physical, chemical, biological, physiological, pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic, genomic, proteomic, metabolomic) garnered from experimentation, peer-reviewed journals, and toxicology databases, OR a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a directly related field of study, OR A combination of successfully completed progressivegraduate level education, as described above, that is beyond the second year of graduate study and professional experience, as described above. For the GS-13:
At least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade (GS-12) or equivalent. Specialized experience must include experience as a lead of an interdisciplinary research team determining the toxicity of molecules, identifying the structural components of a molecule that cause it to be toxic and selective, applying knowledge to answer complex toxicological and risk assessment questions using multidisciplinary data (e.g., physical, chemical, biological, physiological, pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic, genomic, proteomic, metabolomic) garnered from experimentation, peer-reviewed journals, and toxicology databases. This should be demonstrated with multiple first-authored manuscripts and presentations in the field of toxicology. For the GS-14:
At least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade (GS-13) or equivalent. Specialized experience must include experience as a lead of an interdisciplinary research team determining the toxicity of molecules, identifying the structural components of a molecule that cause it to be toxic and selective, applying knowledge to answer complex toxicological and risk assessment questions using multidisciplinary data (e.g., physical, chemical, biological, physiological, pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic, genomic, proteomic, metabolomic) garnered from experimentation, peer-reviewed journals, and toxicology databases. This should be demonstrated with multiple first-authored manuscripts and presentations in the field of toxicology. In addition, they should demonstrate active and successful procurement of funds to support their research activities.
