Interdisciplinary Geographer/Cartographer/Computer Scientist - GS-0150/1370/1550-9/11
As a Geographer/Cartographer/Computer Scientist within the Upper Midwest Environmental Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:
Performing geographic workflows; processes remotely sensed imagery; develops geospatial datasets, databases, and metadata. Collecting, compiling, and analyzing diverse data sets, including remotely sensed data, relating to complex physical and geographic phenomena for extensive areas. Assisting in the design, development, testing, validation, and application of machine-learning methods and algorithms for remote sensing imagery classification and survey applications. Contributing to the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning methods for geospatial and remote sensing applications. Operates a government vehicle as an incidental driver. Physical Demands:
Approximately 90% of the work is accomplished in an office setting, with some field work if necessary, which can be arduous. Occasional lifting or moving of moderately heavy equipment (50 lbs or greater) may be required. Travel in commercial and chartered aircraft or watercraft may be necessary. The ability to drive a vehicle is a necessity. Work Environment:
Work is performed primarily in an office environment, although trips, including overnight trips for training and to field locations may be necessary to complete assigned duties. Compiling and evaluating basic geographical facts from a variety of specified sources, ascertaining discrepancies in data, and presenting geographical information from specified maps, charts, and other source materials in the most useful format. This level of work would have involved following established procedures or detailed instructions and would have required a familiarity with a variety of basic geographic tools and sources. GS-11:
1) locating, examining, evaluating and selecting, from a variety of source materials, information for use in depicting the location and standardizing the nomenclature of physical and humane features on a map, chart or in a gazetteer; 2) determining the distribution of like phenomena (e.g., deciduous vegetation or precipitation) over Eastern U.S., or comparing the distribution of two or three different kinds of phenomena, e.g., deciduous vegetation and precipitation; 3) providing assistance to a higher-graded researcher on small, self-contained studies. Examples 1 & 2 included independent responsibility for small projects or significant segments of larger projects. Discrepancies may have arisen in source materials. Judgment was used to resolve the less difficult problems; a higher-level authority resolved the most difficult problems. Work was carried out in accordance with established procedures and criteria. Evaluating available source material pertinent to charting areas of regular bottom characteristics and simple topography. Knowledge of cartographic concepts, theories and principles, methods and practices and skill sufficient to complete routine production processes improvement projects. This work experience would have involved following established methods and procedures, or detailed instructions; using some judgment in applying basic principles and procedures, and would have required a good general working knowledge of the principles and the theories of cartograph. Independent responsibility to research, analyze, select and prepare photographic and cartographic materials, conduct studies to determine the design characteristics, limitation, and application of program requirements for a well-defined study or for a phase of a larger study that required the planning and carrying out of cartography work. This work would have required the individual to select and make minor adaptations to procedures and accepted practices and handle unexpected conditions arising in the normal course of the work. At this level, cartographers have a sound working knowledge of the principles of cartography and the ability to independently perform moderately difficult and responsible scientific work. Developing and testing software programs or developing and testing portions of more complex systems using 3rd and 4th generation programming languages. Candidates are expected to recognize when deviations from standard procedures are necessary and be capable of recommending appropriate changes. In addition, advanced level mathematics is required for comprehension of the theories, principles, practices, and techniques of computer science. GS-11:
Performing hardware and software analysis, and writing software in an environment that requires a good working knowledge of the syntax, capabilities, and limitations of a programming language, as well as working knowledge of and experience with the operating system under which the software operates. Successful candidates will have had the scope of assignments defined for them, but will be capable of exercising judgment in selecting specific approaches and, when necessary, making minor changes to adapt the methods to specific work situations. You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements for the position by the closing date of the announcement.
